Sleeping Positions & Your Mattress

The ideal sleeping position - how to pick a mattress to suit your style.

We all have our own preferred sleeping position, and the average person spends a third of their life in bed – so how do we know if our mattress is providing us the best support we can get? Your unique sleeping style can correlate directly to the quality of sleep you get – let’s take a closer look at some of the most common sleeping styles.

Side Sleepers:

If you prefer to sleep on your side, you would be joining approximately 75% of all sleepers – this is the most common sleeping position of all! Sleeping on your side is thought to provide a number of health benefits, such as aiding digestion, heartburn, snoring and sleep apnoea. This style is a good middle ground for support – pressure is taken off our joints, and with a pillow between the legs we can even achieve proper spine alignment.

As a side sleeper, you may benefit from a medium soft to medium firm feel mattress. An increase in softness allows the added pressure of our hips and shoulders to sink, while still offering enough support to sufficiently support the spine. A memory foam mattress like our Chiro Care Cool Sleep could be the ideal solution, with pressure relief comfort layers which contour to your shape.

Back Sleepers:

Do you prefer the feeling of sleeping on your back? You might find the most benefit from a medium to firm feel mattress. With only 10% of the population nominating the back as their preferred sleeping position, this is the least common style. The theory is that sleeping on your back is the perfect way to retain a neutral head, neck and spine, however for those who suffer from snoring or sleep apnoea, this style might be one to avoid.

To ensure your spine is adequately supported and your back stays aligned while you rest, a firmer mattress is often the best choice – this works by keeping the middle supported and preventing the hips from sinking out of place. For firm mattresses Oceania is your one stop shop.

Stomach Sleepers:

The second most common sleeping position, this places added stress on the lower back as our body’s natural curves are flattened and twisted – without the right mattress this creates strain on the head and neck.

With a softer mattress, the stomach will sink, pushing the spine further out of alignment – a firmer mattress is recommended for support and comfort. Stomach sleepers also tend to stretch out during the night, so extra edge support is essential. At Oceania Mattress we believe edge support should be a standard in any main mattress – for any mattress mid-range and above we provide edge supports to help you get the most out of your mattress!
